A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance with my family to go back to the Bretania Islands in San Agustin town for a whole day of enjoying to the fullest the sun-drenched pleasures of what is fast becoming one of the premier tourist destinations in the province of Surigao del Sur.
Now, I must confess that, as someone who has grown up with an intimate familiarity with white sand beaches, pounding and frothy-white surf as well as crystal-clear, blue-green coastal waters, I have always felt that I have become more than a bit jaded as far as the attractions of coconut palm-shrouded, tropical island beaches are concerned.
My recent revisit to Bretania has disabused me of such a misconception.
Some natural wonders are so spectacularly unique and breathtakingly beautiful in themselves that returning again and again to visit them once more is like seeing a truly and exquisitely lovely woman up close from a different angle each time. Each visit is a special experience in itself, each one triggering memories that will last a lifetime.
I'll let these pictures taken by friends speak for themselves.
I have gone to that white beach in Brettania that you have mentioned in your Revisiting Paradise article but that was very long time ago maybe 1972 or 1973 during the time there was a loading of logs in Aras-asan. You know i was once a stevedore under the Young Men Labor Union Stevedoring (YMLUS) of Iyo Hernan Layno and Delfin Cueto. I also witness the time when Lianga became a ghost town during the labor problem with Atty. Sindo. Anyway it was long time ago, it was already part of history. Going back to that white beach in Brettania island, it is really worth visiting since there are plenty of shells in the reef areas nearby. I hope it will be declared a fish and shell sanctuary by the LGU and could be one of the dive spot for tourists in Surigao del Sur. The LGU can ask assistance from BFAR-CARAGA and from SDSSU for the Participatory Coastal Resource Assessment (PCRA) over the area.
